WINDSOR TO SAULT STE. MARIE - July 9-11

A nice calm day to enter Lake St. Clair. Slept through most of it as was on watch through the river. Since there was a good weather window, we decided to head out onto Lake Huron instead of overnighting in Sarnia. A strong current through Sarnia had us doing SOG 39 knots.

All kinds of shipping lanes which the freighters were not necessarily adhering too. We were welcomed to a beautiful sunset and continued good weather.

The next day started to get hazy around noon. Sharp eyes and radar came in handy. Water was cold - 48 degrees F. I didn’t realize that Lake Huron was so big. Clouds continued to develop with little moonlight and random showers. An awesome lightning show over the eastern mainland. Winds and thunderstorms were the main during Mike and Frank’s watch and as we entered Detour Passage, they also had to contend with a freighter. As noted earlier, thank goodness for radar.

Rick and I took the watch just as we were entering the St. Mary’s River. Lucky for us, the sky was clearing. There were a couple of downbound freighters to contend with and one on our tail that maintained a good distance.

As daylight approached, the weather cleared as we continued through the river. A nice day for fisherman who were out early.

We reached Sault Ste Marie and docked at Roberta Bondar Marina an 1000 hours.

We spent a pleasant two days here, loading up on supplies, mailing postcards, sightseeing - the guys took in the bush plane museum which they loved. Lots of visitors to the boat looking for food. A nice break before heading for Lake Superior.
